Yesterday, I met with a wonderful woman with incredible experience in Reiki healing and massage therapy. As we have been traveling along this DāO Beauty and Wellness journey, I’m constantly finding ways to connect or rather re-connect with ancient traditions and more natural approaches to caring for the mind, body and hair. I’ve always been a lover of the more luxurious things in life, but I haven’t always had the luxurious paycheck to enjoy them. However, I’ve learned through my interaction with this woman that a monthly low cost massage is accessible and nearly essential for a healthy life.

Let’s dig into the history and benefits of massage:

Ancient Egyptians were the first to systemize and study essential oils creating beautiful perfumes often used in ritual to develop massage and reflexology as therapeutic tools. Evidence of these early treatments are revealed on the tomb walls of Ptahhotep, a high-ranking political advisor during the reign of Djedkare during the 5th Dynasty in the Old Kingdom.

Fast forward to modern times and the proliferation of the study of natural healing approaches shows that massage not only relieves stress, which is the most common sourced benefit, but it also may be helpful for:

  • Anxiety
  • Digestive disorders
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia
  • Myofascial pain syndrome
  • Soft tissue strains or injuries

When I learned how many issues of dis-ease can be treated and even healed by massage, I was truly shocked! In thinking about the tradeoffs of medicines, prescriptions, and pain versus a monthly session of massage, I begin to understand more and more its value.

But, I’m still not convinced of this Reiki healing? What does it mean to send energy to someone? How will I know it’s working?

Let’s first discover it’s meaning and maybe then, we’ll understand its healing benefits.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy.” If someone’s “life force energy” is low, then she is more likely to get sick or feel stressed. If it is high, then she is more capable of being happy and healthy.

Well that makes sense! Additionally, research shows that the Reiki treats the whole body, emotions, mind, and spirit creating beneficial effects including relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. To be clear, Reiki is spiritual in nature and is not a religion. It has no dogma and there is nothing or no-one you need to believe in order to learn or use Reiki. However, Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing recommends a set of simple ideals to practice that promote peace and harmony. The ideals are both guidelines for living a healthy and happy life worthy of love.

This exploration of healing is proving to be incredibly eye-opening for me and my DāO journey. I actually experienced some Reiki healing and felt the “life force energy” being transferred to my body in the form of a tingling sensation. I felt more calm and secure. This is something I’d love to experience again and I’d recommend it to others as well, of course women AND men.

In short, treat yo’ self! And know that the expense of healing treatments can be minuscule compared to the long-term benefits of enjoying a healthy and happy life.
